High school student Hajime Hinata must be the "Ultimate" at something--after all, he got accepted to Hope's Peak Academy, which takes only the nation's elite teens (whether they're elite at being gangsters, gymnasts, or hamster breeders!).

But he doesn't know what his special talent is...only that he and his classmates have been given a surprise summer vacation on Jabberwock Island. It may be a tropical paradise, but their sinister teddy bear headmaster Monokuma still expects them all to complete their assignments if they ever want to go home--namely, murder a fellow student and get away with it, as the survivors cross-examine each other at a classroom trial!

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is an alternate version of the events told in the manga Danganronpa 2: Ultimate Luck and Hope and Despair. That series told the story through the eyes of "Ultimate Lucky Student" Nagito Komaeda; now Goodbye Despair gives you the perspective of his arch-rival in the desperate classroom murder game, Hajime Hinata!

Almost perfect

First of all - if you're a superfan of the series, I think this manga is a must-have. I had previously purchased the Japanese originals as collector's items because the artwork is incredible throughout all 3 books - it's consistently highly detailed and on-model, and true to the original style of the game without looking forced. This is easily the nicest-looking Danganronpa manga out there, and you could certainly buy it just for that. As expected for a manga covering a 30+ hour game, sections can feel a bit rushed, but there is some neat alternate dialogue, character reactions, background scenes, etc that make up for it. This book covers the 1st trial of the series in its entirety, with the trial taking up about 2/3rds of it. I would imagine someone who hasn't played the game would be totally lost, so I'd definitely consider this only if you already know the story. My only gripes: On a few pages, it's noticeable that the text is cut off along some of the edges. In addition, there was the, um... interesting choice to translate Kuzuryuu's dialogue like a 1920's mobster, which is incredibly distracting and frankly weird, as he's never been translated like that in anything else I've seen from either official sources or any fan translations. He sounds like an entirely different character vs. how he is in the game - it's a VERY strong written accent - and it's rather off-putting and annoying to read. I normally don't mind translators taking some creative liberties here and there, but that was a bit much. Hoping they don't keep that style through the 2nd trial. Overall though, I'd still consider this a strong buy if you're a fan of the 2nd game. Check it out!

You don't wanna buy it, but you do

I'm kind of a strange case because I love picking apart translations. I loooove the alternate translation for this manga compared to the others (not this exact manga, but related ones) I've found online from scanlation websites. Plus, the art from this manga is better than all the other ones IMO. I bought the e-book version like a cheapo but if I could rewind, I'd get the paper copy.

Awesome
